On 30 June 1963, the President of the United States of America landed by US Army helicopter in front of the Grandhotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio.
Many people came from each side of the lake to meet this charismatic and fascinating President and JFK was fascinated by the beauty of the Lake.

Caroline of Brunswick

Caroline Amelia Elizabeth of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (17 May 1768 – 7 August 1821), best known as Caroline of Brunswick, was Queen of the United Kingdom as the wife of King George IV from 29 January 1820 until her death in 1821. Between 1795 and 1820, she was Princess of Wales.

The marriage between Caroline and George was not a fairy tale beacuse the king hated her. During a sleepless night, Caroline decided to escape. In 1815, she arrived in Italy and bought Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, where lived for two years. By August 1817, Caroline’s debts were growing, so she sold Villa d’Este and moved to the smaller Villa Caprile near Pesaro

Winston Churchill

In July 1945, after World War II, ex-prime minister of England, Winston Churchill, chose to go on vacation the picturesque village of Moltrasio, and he moved together with his daughter Sarah, his doctor and some employees into Villa Le Rose.

Churchill inspirated by the beauty of the place, painted an admirable landscape of the Lake and tried to portray his state of mind, influenced by the tranquility and serenity of this place. Two of his Lake Como paintings were shown in the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Giuseppe Terragni

Giuseppe Terragni was a famous architect of the Rationalism. He was born in Meda, Lombardy. He attended the Technical College in Como then studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano university. In 1927 he and his brother Attilio opened an office in Como. They remained in practice until Giuseppe’s death during the war. In Como he realized the facade of the first two floors of the Hotel Metropole Suisse, the Novocomum, the war memorial, the Hotel Posta, the Palazzo Terragni and more.

He died of thrombosis in Como in 1943.

Alessandro Volta

Alessandro Volta, a famous Italian physicist, was born in Como in 1745, in the old building still located in via Volta. He was a pioneer of electricity and power, was credited as the inventor of electrical battery and the discoverer of methane. He, also, invented the Voltaic pile in 1799.

Volta’s legacy is celebrated by Tempio Voltiano memorial located in the public gardens by the lake. In Como there is also a museum which has been built in his honour, where you can admire some of equipment that, the scientist used to conduct his experiments.

In Villa Olmo is situated the Volta Foundation , an organization that promotes scientific activities.

His image was depicted on the Italian 10,000 lira note (1990-1997) along with a sketch of his voltaic pile.
